The following are guidelines that may be of good use to those who are members of the team.


Literary Writing

-Literary works are identified by their creative, or artistic intention.
-It is 'an expression of life through the medium of language'.
-"Literary writing is more carefully structured and uses words for the effect of their flow, their sound, and their emotional qualities. Literary writers can also insert tone, rhyme, irony, dialogue, and a host of other devices in the construction of prose or poem.



News Writing

News refers to newly received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events. News writing is simply the reporting of facts. When writing news articles one must try to be OBJECTIVE, TRUTHFUL and FAIR.
-News article must take note of the 5 W's. The W’s in question, as you probably know, refer to the Who, What, When, Where and Why that every story should address.
-Figuring out what details to give a reader, and when, is key in constructing a story. The answer, of course, depends on the facts.
 -A lead, which is a journalism slang term for the first sentence or two of a story, is an incredibly important part of the process.
-You need to draw a reader in while telling him why the story matters.




 What is a Lead?

-It is the first word, sentence, or paragraph of the story.
-The most important part of the story. It summarizes the story. The hook. It must interest the readers to read the rest of the story.
-Answers write away the most important questions: the 5 W's and 1 H. 




Tips in Data Gathering:

-Make sure your facts are accurate
-Keep your sentences short

-Be specific

-Avoid use of long and super complex words
-Write in the third person point of view
-Do not editorialize





Feature Writing

-A combination of news and features
-Writer may give his impressions, may describe and narrate without resorting to biased opinion

Steps in Writing the Feature Article:

-Pick your subject matter.
-Limit your subject to a specific area.
-Write a tentative title.
-Spotlight the main things you aim to do in the feature.
-Pinpoint the highlights with specific details.
-Rewrite or revise.




Sports Writing

Skills required:
-Excellent command of the language used.
-Creative
-Good record keeper
-Research-orianted
-Have good interviewing skills
-A good reader




Editorial Cartooning

-Art of expressing the newspaper's opinion in a form of cartoon
-The cartoon should express HUMOR and OPINION
-The lesser text included in the cartoon the better.

Humor: Unusual illustration, Deformed character, Exaggerated scene

 

 

 

Page Layouting

-The process of placing, and arranging text, photos and graphics on the page created with a desktop publishing software.
A good layout design needs the right colors, exciting layout ideas, and true elements such as balance, contrast, and white space.

Page elements: Navigation ( Page numbers, Table of contents...etc)
Body (Text elements)
Artwork (Visual elements)
Titles (Headline, subheadings)
Credits (Bylines, logos, copyright info)




Photojouralism

-Photography is a tool for remembering. It tells stories by freezing moments. 
-A good photographer should have creative imagination, and proper execution of the shots.

-Wide angle shot
-Middle Shot
-Close-up shot

Basic Angles
-Top view
-Man's eye view

Captioning

-2-3 sentences only
-Tells a story about the picture
-Use present tense
-First sentence should provide the 5W's
